Border Studies Program
The Border Studies Program is a short-term, study away program co-founded by Professors Bickham Mendez (Sociology) and Tandeciarz (Hispanic Studies). For over ten years, faculty affiliated with Latin American Studies and Sociology have co-directed this program.
During winter break, you will take a week-long immersion trip in the US-Mexican border region in the Tucson, AZ and Nogales, Sonora area. There, you will meet representatives from non-governmental organizations, public defenders, and government officials. You also observe deportation proceedings and hike along a "migrant trail."
Upon your return, you will take a seminar course offered by the program's co-directors. The seminars provide you the opportunity to deepen your knowledge of immigration issues. You will also gain analytical tools you will use to process what you observed while traveling.
In 2019 Professors Monika Gosin (Sociology) and Paulina Carrion (Hispanic Studies) co-directed the program. The program is offered every other year.
