Professor Alan Fuchs Memorial Scholarship
The Professor Alan Fuchs Memorial Scholarship is a merit-based award bestowed each Spring to a philosophy major, typically a junior, who will be continuing as a student at W&M during the subsequent academic year. This scholarship is established in loving memory of Alan Fuchs, Professor Emeritus of Philosophy (1941-2020), who taught generations of students at William & Mary from 1969 until his retirement from full-time teaching in 2007.
The current selection procedure is as follows: Up to 10 junior philosophy majors, determined by “social class” status, are invited by the faculty to submit a writing sample, usually a paper from a previous course. The winner is chosen based on overall and major GPA, the quality of the writing sample, and other criteria deemed relevant by the selection committee (e.g., the number and difficulty of philosophy courses taken, the quality of contributions to class discussions).
