Computer Science Students Elected to Phi Beta Kappa
Mark Nauta and Jennifer Thorne have been selected as Phi Beta Kappa Spring 2011 Initiates, the highest academic honor awarded to liberal arts students in the United States. Membership selection is based on intellectual honesty and curiosity, careful scholarship, creativity, good character, and a commitment to the life of the mind. While members of the election committee do consider a candidate's GPA during their deliberations, they give great weight to faculty recommendations to determine the depth and breadth of candidates' academic endeavors.
For both Mark and Jennifer, the breadth of their academic endeavors is an easy case to make. Mark is a double major in Computer Science and Classical Studies. Jennifer is a Mathematics major with a minor in Computer Science.
After graduation, Mark plans to attend a graduate school program in game design. Mark's childhood dream was to make video games and he plans on pursuing that dream. Mark is in the process of applying to graduate programs now.
In the fall, Jennifer will be joining William & Mary's Computational Operations Research Master's Program where she will pursue her interests in both computer science and mathematics, with an emphasis on mathematical programming, discrete event simulation, and statistics.
