Miramar with Rosette Quartet

Performance Details

Date: February 11, 2022 at 7:00pm
Location:  Ewell Recital Hall
Admission: Open to the Public

Miramar, the group, aims to capture poetry through their music. The band features the “lush parallel harmonies of Rei Álvarez and Laura Ann Singh.” (Roots World) “Their harmonizing is exquisite” (AllAboutJazz.com) and NPR.org described “[T]heir voices intertwine in a spare and elegant invocation of heritage.”

Miramar’s core repertoire includes music from all over Latin America with a spotlight on women composers and music from Puerto Rico. Their debut album released by Brooklyn’s Barbes Records in 2016 was in dedication to the unsung hero of the Puerto Rican bolero, Sylvia Rexch. Alvarez, Simmons and Singh also write original compositions that infuse key components of the traditional bolero and bolero-rock with their own wide-reaching musical influences. In 2019 they released two original bolero-rock songs on the legendary Daptone Records. Miramar’s set also sometimes includes songs from Greece and Russia that came out of similar international romantic song movements of the 1960s.

Miramar performs as a sextet often with the addition of a string quartet or orchestra. All string and orchestra arrangements are composed by pianist Marlysse Simmons. The group has toured internationally and most regularly performs between their home town of Richmond, VA and Brooklyn, NY. Performance highlights include NPR's Tiny Desk, NY’s globalFEST, Lincoln Center's Out of Doors, Brooklyn's BRIC's JazzFest, NYC’s, Stanford University, Cleveland Museum of Art and The Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage. In 2019, they were recipients of a Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation grant which facilitated their first international performances in France. In March 2020, they toured Russia for two weeks with the Forum for Cultural Engagement (FCE) where their schedule of performances with local string quartets was interspersed with educational and therapeutic outreach.

This event is open to the public.
