Biography
Joanne Meyer White plays Second Flute with the Virginia Symphony, a position she has held since 1996. She has since become a fixture in the Hampton Roads flute community and thoroughly enjoys her diverse musical life playing for the Symphony, The Virginia Opera and The Virginia Arts Festival.
A native of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, one of Joanne’s first jobs was as principal flute of the Vermont Symphony. She has performed with many orchestras including the Grant Park Orchestra, Richmond Symphony and The Albany Symphony. She completed her musical training at Boston University and McGill University in Montreal, earning her bachelor’s and master’s degrees, respectively. Her biggest influences include Timothy Hutchins, Doriot Dwyer, Peter Lloyd, and her very first teacher, Joanna Heim.
She has taught at many local institutions including East Carolina University, Virginia Wesleyan, Hampton University, and the Academy of Music in Norfolk. Currently she teaches at William & Mary, The Governor’s School for the Arts and in her home studio.
Joanne has been the coordinator of The Hampton Roads Flute Faire since 2009; an annual event now in its 23rd year of educating, nurturing and inspiring flutists.
