Honors

The Department Honors Program provides qualified students the opportunity to complete a two-semester, six-credit research project under the supervision of a faculty advisor. Each Honors project culminates in a thesis and oral defense. Students with strong academic records, who have completed either Abstract Algebra (MATH307) or Elementary Analysis (MATH 311), and whose overall performance in mathematics courses is very strong should consider writing an Honors Thesis.

There are many possible areas in which qualified mathematics majors can do Honors projects. In particular, students with double majors are welcome to do interdisciplinary research for their Honors or other research projects. Students are welcome to discuss these possibilities with the mathematics department chair or major adviser.

The Charles Center coordinates Honors projects, maintains a list of completed Mathematics Honors Projects, and can provide funding for undergraduate research. Guidelines, forms and other information pertaining to the Honors Program is also on the Charles Center site.
