Background
Yonca Özdemir holds a PhD in Public and International Affairs from the University of Pittsburgh and an MA in Political Science and International Relations from the University of Delaware. Her expertise lies in international and comparative political economy, with research interests spanning economic reform, development policy, globalization, foreign policy, foreign aid, neoliberalism, and populism. Her works include both cross-national studies and case studies of Turkey, Cyprus, Israel, and Latin America. She published articles in journals such as Middle Eastern StudiesSoutheast European and Black Sea StudiesContemporary Politics, and Critical Sociology. Additionally, she co-edited the book titled Political Economy of Global Capitalism: A Framework for Turkey’s Dependent Development, 1838–2020 (2022). She also contributes to various newspapers in Turkey and Cyprus on a range of political issues. Before joining William & Mary, she served for fifteen years at the Middle East Technical University, Northern Cyprus Campus, where she was dismissed due to her critical stance on the Turkish government. Following this, she taught at Haverford College during the 2023-2024 academic year.
