Andrew Dean joined the department in 2024 and is an Adjunct Professor focusing on federal, state and local government legal issues. Professor Dean has a law degree from The George Washington University Law School and a Master's Degree in Science and Technology Intelligence from the National Intelligence University at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. He is licensed to practice law in Florida, Virginia, EDVA, MDFL, the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals. Prior to joining the Adjunct Faculty at W&M, Dean served in a number of legal positions at the intersection of government policy and law including as an Attorney with the James City County Attorney's Office, as Legal Counsel to the Defense Intelligence Agency's Science and Technology Directorate, and as Legal Counsel to U.S. Senate's Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee's Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations. Currently, Dean is a Commander in the United States Navy Reserves assigned to Navy Cyber Defense Operations Command in Suffolk, Virginia. Prior military tours include time as an F/A 18 Super Hornet Pilot at NAS Lemoore, deployment as an Exploitation and Interrogation Team Lead at Navy Special Warfare Development Group, and various leadership positions at Navy Intelligence, Cryptologic, and Maritime Cyber Warfare commands.
