2017 Faculty Governance Award
Citation for John McGlennon
With his demonstrated leadership and problem-solving skills, his willingness to contribute the time required to do an outstanding job, and his steadfast adherence to our core values and principles, Professor McGlennon has a distinguished record of service.
Serving a total of eighteen years as chair of the Department of Government, he shepherded a significant expansion in the size, quality, and gender diversity of the department's faculty and helped to plan and guide the long-awaited transition into Tyler Hall. He also virtually created the role of pre-law advisor, helped to institutionalize that position, and served in that capacity for more than 25 years, assisting students of all majors; and served on the Steering Committee that helped to develop the Public Policy Program.
He is a founding member of the A&S Dean’s Advisory Council (now the Council of Chairs and Program Directors) and of the College's Faculty Assembly (serving as Vice-President and President). He has also chaired the A&S Faculty Affairs Committee, Admissions Policy Committee, Procedural Review Committee, Special Ad Hoc Committee on Summer School; and served as a member of the Dean's Ad Hoc Committee on NTE Faculty and the College's Budget Policy Advisory Committee and its predecessor, the University Policy Advisory Committee.
For his many contributions toward making the College a better institution and better place for faculty and students, it is fitting that Professor McGlennon be recognized with the Arts & Sciences 2017 Faculty Governance Award.
