2013 Faculty Governance Award
Citation for Silvia Tandeciarz
Since joining the faculty in 1999, Silvia Tandeciarz, Associate Professor of Hispanic Studies, has undertaken significant governance roles for the Hispanic Studies section, the Modern Languages and Literatures Department, Arts & Sciences, and the College as a whole. Her service consistently has been distinguished by her commitment to equity, fairness, transparency, mentorship, and advocacy on behalf of faculty (TE and NTE), students, and staff members. She helped to transform the curriculum of the Spanish and Literature program into the culturally-based Hispanic Studies program; served on her department's personnel and policy committees; and accepted the positions of Associate Chair, Acting Chair, and, currently, Chair. For Arts & Sciences she served as Interim Dean for Educational Policy, as co-chair of the Dean's Advisory Council (now the Council of Chairs and Program Directors), and as co-director of the year-long workshop CADEAU for new chairs and program directors. She also served on search committees for the Admission Office, Office of Academic Advising, and the Dean of the Faculty of Arts & Sciences as well as the Administrative Assistants Compensation Review Committee, which worked to create more equitable conditions for A&S staff members. In the areas of global education and undergraduate research her efforts have resulted in a study abroad program at the Universidad La Plata, Argentina, and student internship programs at La Plata's Regional Council on Memory Studies and the D.C.-based National Security Archives, weaving these new programs into the institutional fabric of the College. For her willingness to envision and act on larger issues affecting the College community, her commitment to governance of all types, and her outstanding record of leadership it is fitting that Professor Tandeciarz be recognized with the Arts & Sciences 2013 Faculty Governance Award.
