Charles Center Summer Research Grants & Honors Fellowships

Looking to embark on a mentored summer research endeavor? Apply for funding from the Charles Center!

Every summer, Charles Center awards over half a million dollars in grants to fund summer undergraduate research in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences.

There are two categories of grants available through the online application, open to undergraduate students in every major:

Summer Research Grant: Unless otherwise noted, these awards are $4,000 to support seven full-time weeks of research. Freshmen, sophomores, and juniors are eligible to apply.

Honors Fellowship: These awards are $5,000 to support ten full-time weeks of pre-Honors research. Juniors planning to complete Departmental Honors during their senior year are eligible to apply.

The online application is now closed. The 2025 application will reopen in late October and and will be due February 17, 2025.

Eligibility

Summer Research Grants: Freshmen, sophomores and juniors who will return to campus (or take part in a W&M study abroad program) the following fall are eligible to apply.
Honors Fellowships: Juniors planning to complete a Departmental Honors project during their senior year may apply. Students should have submitted their Application for Admission to conduct Departmental Honors by the time they apply for an Honors Fellowship. Please see the Guidelines and Planning page for Arts & Sciences eligibility rules and check with your Honors advisor, department chair or program director for applicable rules.
- Honors Fellowship applications that are not selected for full Fellowship funding ($5,000) will still automatically be considered for Charles Center Summer Research Grants ($4,000).
Monroe Scholars:
- Monroe Scholars applying for Honors Fellowships are also automatically considered for their junior year Monroe Grant if they did not already use their $4,000 research grant funding sophomore year.
- Monroe Scholars cannot apply for two different grants in the same summer. For example, if applying for the Monroe Scholar Sophomore/Junior Grant, they should not also apply for a Charles Center Summer Research Grant or Honors Fellowship.
Students who have been selected for a Charles Center-sponsored internship (such as Woody, City Scholars, etc.) will not be eligible to receive a Charles Center Summer Research Grant or Honors Fellowship during the same summer.
Students already fully funded for research by another internal or external summer grant for $4,000 or more will not be eligible to receive Charles Center funding, in the interest of supporting other students who have no other source of funding.

Application & Funding Timeline

Late October - Application opens
March 7, 2025 - Deadline to apply for Complimentary Summer Research Housing for those conducting research locally.
February 17, 2025 - Application deadline. Honors Fellowship applicants should have submitted their Application for Admission to conduct Departmental Honors by the time they apply for an Honors Fellowship.
February 20, 2025 - Faculty mentor recommendation form deadline
March 2025 - Applications will be reviewed by the Undergraduate Research Committee. Your proposal will be read by faculty both inside and outside of your research topic area, so make sure that it does not contain jargon and is understandable to an educated person outside of your field.
First week of April 2025 - Funding notification emails begin to go out. Emails will go out in waves so not all students may be notified at the same exact time.
Mid-April 2025 - Signed award letters and expectations agreements (completed with faculty mentors) are due.
May 2025 - Stipends are disbursed to students as checks mailed to the address specified on the award letter or direct deposit (W&M student employees only)
June, July, & August 2025 - Students conduct research according to the schedules they set with their faculty mentors
August 2025 - May 2026 - Honors Fellows continue research
September 2025 - Charles Center Summer Research Grant recipients and Honors Fellows graduating in December 2025 present at the Fall Undergraduate Research Symposium
April 2026 - Honors Fellows graduating in May present at the Honors Research Symposium

Getting Started

The first step is to discuss your research project idea with your William & Mary faculty project advisor. Make sure they know that they will be completing a recommendation form for you, mentoring your research, and helping you with your presentation.
Access the online application and create an account. Note: if you use your W&M email, make sure to use a different password than the one you use for your school account for security purposes.

Project Proposal Prompts

The project proposal questions will be answered within the online application.

For a general audience, summarize your research question and the significance of its outcome. Please write in the third person (no "I" statements); for example, "This project will explore..." (<150 words)
Discuss your methodology. What is your research plan? Where do you propose to conduct the research? Include a project timeline, making sure that the project lasts a minimum of seven full-time weeks. (Note: the project may be spread out over multiple chunks of time, as long as it lasts at least 280 hours) (<350 words)
What resources are available to you for this project (virtual access to collections/ archives, additional funding, etc.)? (<150 words)
What new knowledge or interpretation will emerge from this proposed project? (<150 words)
What will the deliverable be from your research (article, play, website, story map, etc.)? (<150 words)
Personal Statement: Explain how this project fits into your academic plan.For example, did it emerge from a course you took; is it related to your major; something you are doing to prepare for graduate school; or an interest that you haven't had a chance to explore yet. After reading your personal statement, a reviewer should understand the context of this project within your intellectual and academic trajectory. (<250 words)

Note: This proposal must be written by the student. However, we do encourage project advisors to read it and make constructive comments.

Proposal Presentation

It's important that you can explain your project to a non-specialist audience in your own words. We want to give you a chance to do this in a non-written format. Please explain your project succinctly in a two-slide, two-minute presentation. DO NOT take a video of yourself, just voiceover narration for two slides. We recommend using Zoom or Powerpoint to record your voice as you display your slides. These slides can include graphs, charts, illustrations, photos, or other visuals that help explain your project proposal. Include your research question, why it's important to you and how you plan to answer the question. Please use this an opportunity to explain the big picture of your project in a dynamic way; do not simply read your proposal. The presentation should be no longer than 2 minutes.

Research Ethics Compliance

If applicable, you must obtain approval from the appropriate Research Ethics Compliance committee. Please carefully review the section below for full details.

International Travel

Please review the following information if you plan to travel internationally to conduct your summer research.

1. Review the W&M Travel Alerts website to check the status of your intended destination.

If your country is listed as a Restricted Destination, travel is prohibited and you must adjust your plans to do research in another destination.
If there is a W&M Travel Risk Warning, you must submit an application for approval to the Travel Warning Review Committee through the Reves Center in order for your proposal to be considered for funding.

2. If you are traveling abroad, once you are notified whether your grant is awarded, you will be prompted to provide your information so the Charles Center can purchase your CISI Comprehensive Medical and Evacuation insurance. You will also be required to attend a predeparture orientation session.

Recommendation Form

The William & Mary faculty member who has agreed to be your project mentor must complete a recommendation form on your behalf through the online portal. You must meet to discuss your proposal with the project mentor before registering them in the system. When you enter the faculty member's name and email into the application system, they will be sent a link to complete the form. Please do this before the application deadline, so they have enough time to complete the form. You may submit your application before your faculty mentor completes the form.

The recommendation form is due three days after the application deadline and must be received in order for your proposal to be considered for funding. You are responsible for checking online whether the form has been submitted by the recommendation deadline.

Application to Honors

To apply for an Honors Fellowship, your Application for Admission to Departmental Honors must first be completed on this form. For questions concerning Departmental Honors, please email cchonors@wm.edu. (NOTE: Students applying for Honors Fellowships must have their Departmental Honors application submitted by the Honors Fellowship deadline.)

Research Ethics Compliance

If your research involves any of the following, you must submit a request for approval to the appropriate Research Compliance committee before submitting your application. Approval must be obtained before you begin research.

Work involving living human subjects (including surveys, interviews, focus groups, or questionnaires)

Review the information on the Charles Center's Research Involving Human Subjects webpage to determine which committee your research protocol should be submitted to
You and your faculty mentor/PI must complete the CITI training module for your research discpline (Area I - Humanities, Area II - Social Science, or Area III - STEM)
Take one of the following steps depending on the nature of your research:
- Submit a proposal to the Student IRB (exempt research)
- Have your faculty mentor submit a proposal to Protection of Human Subjects (PHSC) (non-exempt research)
- List your faculty mentor's PHSC or EDIRC (School of Education) approval information on the research grant application form if you are working on their research project.

Work that uses or produces radioactive materials

Speak to your faculty mentor and/or contact committee chair Eric Bradley with questions

Work that involves the use and care of vertebrate animals

You and your faculty mentor/PI must complete the CITI training modules listed as required for the program's course entitled "Investigators, Staff and Students-Working with the IACUC" under the "Laboratory Animal Welfare" curriculum. All personnel whose work involves activities with fish must complete the CITI modules titled either "Working with Fish in Research Settings" or "I work with Zebrafish: Danio rerio".
Work with your faculty mentor to submit a proposal through the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)

Work that involves recombinant DNA, or infectious agents, or direct or indirect contact with wild-caught animals that may harbor infectious agents, or any human fluid or tissue.

Please note: It has been determined by W&M that oversight of Select Agents falls under the purview of the Environmental Health and Safety Office. See a complete list of Select Agents and Toxins (pdf). Questions in regard to Select Agents should be directed to Teresa Belback, Director of EHS.

Evaluation Criteria

Your proposal will be reviewed by a group of faculty reviewers from inside and outside your field.

Each application for a research grant will be evaluated on the following criteria:

Clarity of Proposal

Is there a well-defined research question? Does the student clearly convey the impact/big picture of the research project? Is the proposal well written? Could a layperson understand the main points of the proposal?
Methodology

Is the methodology of the project explained clearly and in detail? Is project a timeline provided? Do the research steps make logical sense?
Preparation

Candidate’s academic or other preparation for project․ Does the candidate have sufficient background or training such as coursework, research, etc․ (formal or informal), to make the project a success? (This is based on transcript and prior experience, which may be reflected in the personal statement․)
Feasibility

Feasibility of proposed project․ Does the candidate have access to the necessary resources to make the project a success? Can the proposed work be completed in the proposed timeline? Does the advisor recommendation form indicate a degree of support that will allow the project to be successful?
Proposal Presentation

Does the student demonstrate a clear understanding of the project’s big picture?
Personal Statement

Does the student clearly explains how this project fits within their intellectual trajectory?

Funding to Promote Specific Categories of Research

Use the Charles Center grant application to apply for general funding, as well as for funding in the categories listed below. Applicants will indicate on the application form if their research falls into any of these categories. If your research does not match any of descriptions below, your application will still be considered for general funding.

Arts & Humanities

Catron Scholarship for Artistic Development

Research or classes/workshops off campus in creative & artistic development conducted by a rising junior or senior.
This is a separate application from the Charles Center Summer Research Grant. Please see the Catron Scholarship webpage for details, and select Catron Scholarship in the SlideRoom application menu.
The Catron fund was established for Dr. Louis E. Catron, Professor of Theatre Emeritus.

Christian-Ewell Scholarship

Research on topics involving Latin America.
Mr. David Bruce Christian '73 established the endowment which funds this scholarship. The award is made in honor of Judith Ewell, Newton Professor of History, for her work at William & Mary.

ENSP Anne Davis '16 Summer Fellowship in Social and/or Environmental Justice

Provides support for a student conducting research associated with social and/or environmental justice.
The funds might be used, for example, for research in the areas of clean energy, GMOs, plastics pollution or other issues related to environmental advocacy. Alternatively, funds could be used to research LGBTQA+, immigration or other social justice issues or to support the completion of a summer program that focuses on such areas as affordable housing, food security, or seeking to end mountain-top removal.
Recipients will write a brief “news story” overviewing their research or program experience
and findings that will be posted on the ENSP website.
In addition to the main summer research grant, the selected student will be able to utilize $500 in supplies and their faculty mentor will be able to utilize $500 for supplies, research, and/or travel reimbursement through the ENSP department.
This award is partially sponsored through the ENSP department.

Gaither-Johnson Summer Research Fellowship

Research connected to the Lemon Project and some aspect of the historical relationship between African Americans and William & Mary. More information is available on the Gaither-Johnson webpage.
This award is made possible by the Gaither-Johnson family.

Jacobs Scholarship

Note: Due to W&M travel restrictions, this scholarship will not be available for Summer 2024.
Research in any field taking place in Israel.

Ponic Student Research Fund

Science & Mathematics

Climate Change Scholarship Fund

To support students engaged in project-based climate change research at William & Mary, with preference given to students in the Conservation Research Program through IIC.
This scholarship is designed for those who have done prior study or work related to climate change.
Applicants must have declared a major prior to proposal submission, and have a minimum GPA of 3.6.
The applicant must have taken prior coursework, done research in or have demonstrable knowledge in field of proposed research.
Students must submit TWO letters of recommendation from people in the field, at least one of whom must be a W&M faculty member.

Cummings Memorial Summer Scholarship for Research in the Sciences

Students from underrepresented groups working in the sciences.
These scholarships are made possible by the Frances L. and Edwin L. Cummings Memorial Science Research Endowment.

Morton-Brown Scholarship

Research related to the bio-med disciplines (ie biology, kinesiology, neuroscience, etc).

Undergraduate Research in the Sciences Fund

Research of students who are majoring in science (including but not limited to fields such as physics, chemistry, geology, biology, math, computer science, etc.)
As possible, student should have demonstrated financial need in pursuit of their major
As possible, student should be from a group underrepresented in their field of study.

Social Sciences

Ampersand Award Fund

Research projects that explore practical causes of income inequality or the role of family in life outcomes, or a range of other academic and societal topics that lead to impactful, outward-facing research and identify real-time abatement measures.
NOTE: proposals for this fund should account for 10 weeks of summer research (vs the standard 7 weeks) since the total award amount will be $5,000.

Climate Change Scholarship Fund

To support students engaged in project-based climate change research at William & Mary, with preference given to students in the Conservation Research Program through IIC.

What if I belong to a scholars program?

Scholars Program Funding

Students in these programs will apply for funding through the Charles Center Summer Research Grant:

Sharpe Community Scholars Summer Grant - for students participating in the Sharpe Community Scholars program.
WMSURE Summer Grant - summer grants available for William & Mary Scholar award recipients.

Students in the Monroe Scholars Program have their own separate applications for funding.

Can I have an internship (or other full-time opportunity) and also receive a Charles Center Summer Research Grant in the same summer?

Students accepting a grant commit to spending 7 weeks of full-time work or a total of 280 hours spread throughout the summer on the project. Committing to a full-time internship, job, courseload, or other summer experience at the same time you are conducting your research will not leave enough time to follow through on the research grant commitment.

You may incorporate an external internship into your project only if you are able to dedicate at least seven full-time weeks to the project. For example, if you are doing a full-time, seven week, unpaid internship with an environmental non-profit organization and this non-profit permits you to dedicate full-time to your research project, you are eligible for funding. If your work with the non-profit is a fully paid job, you may not receive Charles Center funding because 100% of your time is already committed.

You can only receive one Charles Center-funded research grant or internship opportunity per summer (this includes Monroe Scholar funding, the Catron grant, and Charles Center-sponsored internships (such as Woody, Freeman, City Scholars, etc.)

Can I use the funding to study abroad?

You may not use the grant for a summer study abroad program. If there is a program where you can take a course that is pertinent to your research, you may count the time you spend on that class toward the seven total weeks. For example, if you're doing a study on Virginia Woolf and the W&M in Cambridge program is offering a course on Bloomsbury, you may use the hours spent in that class toward the seven weeks, but you may not count the entire five weeks of the Cambridge program. You must complete the rest of the seven weeks of research either before or after the study abroad session. You should articulate the timetable clearly in your project proposal.

Can I receive Charles Center funding AND additional funding from another source?

Students already fully funded for research by another internal or external summer grant for $4,000 or more will not be eligible to receive Charles Center funding, in the interest of supporting other students who have no other source of funding.

As an alternative to Charles Center funding, you may want to explore F.U.S.E.

I have secured a research position at an off-campus location this summer. Can I apply to use Charles Center money to support this opportunity?

The goal of the Charles Center is to provide rigorous undergraduate research experiences for our students, so we are happy to fund students doing external research experiences. However, the definition and conduct of research vary widely across institutions. To ensure that the activity follows the university's guidelines, we require students to be sponsored by a W&M professor who understands the nature of the research experience that you are proposing. For example, if you propose to be a research assistant for a non-profit organization focused on conservation of whales, your mentor should be a professor who studies conservation, whales, biology or a related field.

What if things don't go as planned and I need to switch projects after receiving funding?

Funding decisions are evaluated based on the project information you submit on your application. Changing your project after being approved for funding is significant and should be discussed with [[kmpatterson,Kate Patterson]] as soon as possible.

Can I apply for both a Charles Center Summer Research Grant and an Honors Fellowship during the same summer?

No. There is just one application, and you will select whether you are applying for an Honors Fellowship. If your application does not receive a strong enough score from reviewers for full Honors Fellowship funding, you are still automatically considered to receive a Charles Center Summer Research Grant instead.

Am I required to apply for and receive an Honors Fellowship in order to do a senior Honors project?

No. The 10-week Honors Fellowship is an optional experience that allows you to get a "head start" on your thesis before the fall. Many students complete honors theses during their senior year without Honors Fellowship funding.

Need Complimentary Summer Research Housing?

A limited number of undergraduates conducting summer research at William & Mary during Summer 2025 are eligible to receive free on-campus housing. The application link and process timeline can be found below.
