Applying for a Study Away grant

We are now accepting Study Away grants for the '24-'25 academic year.  Applications are accepted on a rolling basis through March 31 for the following fall and November 30 for the following spring semester.  Applications will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis until funds are spent.

In order to complete your application for a Study Away grant through the Charles Center, you will need to have the following information available for the online application form:

  • Name
  • Department/program
  • W&M email
  • Name of existing/planned course (with a Study Away component)
  • Is (or will) this (be) a credit-bearing course?
    • If so, how many credits is this course worth?
  • Does this course already exist, or would it be a new course?
    •  If an existing course:  course catalog number
    • If an existing course: Has this course been approved by the EPC to carry any COLL attributes?
      • If so, please list COLL attributes (e.g., COLL 300)
    • If a new course: Do you intend to apply for COLL attributes for your new course
  • Number of students who will participate in the study away trip
  • Total number of faculty (including trip coordinator) who will participate in the trip
    • Name of other faculty who will participate in the trip
  • Primary destination
  • Number of days at primary destination
  • Please list any additional destinations
  • Trip start date (mm/dd/yyyy)
  • Trip starting location (city, state)
  • Trip ending date (mm/dd/yyyy)
  • Trip ending location (city, state)
  • Does this trip involve any international travel?
    • If so, please describe the international destination(s) and number of days to be spent abroad.
  • In 2-3 sentences, please describe how this trip adds educational value to your course.
  • What, specifically, does your proposed study away experience offer undergraduate students that is otherwise unavailable on campus or in the greater Williamsburg area?
  • If applicable, please describe how this study away experience is an applied learning/applied research opportunity for your students.
  • The Study Away program is supported by private donor funds. Please help us demonstrate the impact of this program to our donors by providing a summary of how these funds will be used to enhance the undergraduate experience and/or the W&M intellectual community. You may reuse language from your answer above, provided that it is accessible to a donor audience (at least 150 words):
  • Briefly describe any experience you have in coordinating/leading a multi-day undergraduate student excursion.
