Apply for a Community of Scholars grant
We are now accepting applications for Community of Scholars grants for the '23-'24 academic year. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis through November 30 for the fall semester and March 31 for the spring and will not be reviewed over the summer. (Applications for Community of Scholars grants for the '24-'25 academic year will open September 1, 2023.)
Expenses covered include:
- Up to $500 to encourage intellectual interaction with students outside the classroom (e.g., book or film discussion groups; or trips to lectures, museums, performances, laboratories, or field sites, including associated travel and/or meal expenses)
- Grants up to $1,000 are available to support lectures, poetry readings, debates, performances of leading scholars and artists in a variety of disciplines and professions.
Funds are limited. Applications will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis until funds are spent. Applications of the '24-'25 academic year will open July 1, 2023.
In order to complete your application for a Community of Scholars grant through the Charles Center, you will need to have the following information available for the online application form:

- Your role (e.g., tenured/tenure eligible faculty)
- Home department/program
- What types of funds are you requesting (co-curricular activities or visiting speaker)?
- Short title for your proposal (80 characters or less)
- Approximate project start date (mm/dd/yyyy)
- Approximate project end date (mm/dd/yyyy)
- Please briefly describe your proposal's intended purpose and how it will increase intellectual interaction between faculty and students outside of the classroom (1600 characters or less)
- The Community of Scholars program is supported by private donor funds. Please help us demonstrate the impact of this program to our donors by providing a summary of how these funds will be used to enhance the undergraduate experience and/or the W&M intellectual community. You may reuse language from your answer above, provided that it is accessible to a donor audience (at least 150 words).

Please provide a budget for the amount you are requesting from Community of Scholars. The total should match your request and may not exceed $500 for co-curricular activities and $1,000 for guest speakers.We are required to follow W&M's business meal policy. Please be aware that current meal limits for the Williamsburg area are $14 for breakfast, $16 for lunch, and $29 for dinner.
