Pond Safety
Children and water together are always a potential risk. While it is still important to watch small children around any water, this design gives children access while minimizing the risk. First, the height of the ponds above the ground allows small children to look in without having to balance on the edge. Second, the depth is only 18 inches, with a step at 9 inches. A typical toddler who manages to fall in could easily stand up with their head above water. The 9-inch step makes it easier to climb out. (In many localities, backyard ponds deeper than 18 inches need to be fenced with a childproof gate. At 18 inches, they are considered shallow enough to be relatively safe.)
