President's Collection of Art
Mission Statement
The President’s Collection of Art seeks to create an environment in which visual arts will flourish and enhance the quality of life at William & Mary. The primary aim of the Collection is to encourage the creation of original works of art, in all forms, and to serve as a channel for community building and engagement through public exhibition of these works.
History
The President’s Collection of Art, originally called The President’s Collection of Faculty and Student Art, was created to support the efforts of the many artists who work at William & Mary by acquiring and exhibiting their work. In 1992, through the generosity of President and Mrs. Timothy Sullivan, William & Mary alumni and friends of the university, an Endowment was established to acquire, maintain and preserve works of art for this purpose. A purchase award was launched in the spring of 1992 to honor exceptional student work and, as the Endowment grew, additional works were added to the collection including those created by faculty. Beginning in 2009, purchases and donations from alumni have been included in the Collection.
Objectives
Through public exhibition, The President’s Collection of Art strives to promote dialogue and a broader understanding of the visual arts. Exposure of the Collection also serves to strengthen cultural awareness and expand the horizons of the students and the William & Mary community. The following objectives are vital to the mission of the President’s Collection of Art.
- Develop the creative and scholarly potential of the students
- Enhance a conscious awareness and respect for self-expression
- Support the faculty in its pursuit of excellence in teaching and research
- Work in partnership with a broad array of departments at William & Mary
