Visual Identity

Learn about the W&M Bray School Lab visual identity.

Renowned Cuban graphic designer Alejandro Rodríguez Fornés, known as Alucho, developed visual and metaphorical identities of the work we do in Strategic Cultural Partnerships and at the Bray School Lab.

A graduate of Havana’s Instituto Superior de Diseño (ISDi) in 2008, Alucho’s award-winning work has been exhibited in poster competitions all around the world, including in Poland, Bolivia, Russia, Ecuador, China, Cuba and and the United States - including at Swem Library.

an illustrated image of a pencil with a bird over a background of names

The pencil references the literacy skills Williamsburg Bray School scholars developed while studying. The bird evokes Maya Angelou’s I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings; the design simultaneously captures freedom and entrapment, referencing the religious, pro-slavery curriculum of the school and the paradoxical agency seeded by teaching literacy skills to enslaved and free Black children. In the background, the names of the children who studied at the Williamsburg Bray School ensure their legacy lives on.
