Olde Guarde Luncheon & Reunion
The Olde Guarde, comprised of alumni who have advanced past their 50th class reunion, held their Homecoming luncheon on Friday, Oct. 20, 1917, in Sadler Center, Chesapeake A, B, & C. In order to learn more about the 50th commemoration of the first African American students in residence at William & Mary, several of us were invited to lunch and to speak. Justin Reid ’09, currently Director of African American Programs at the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities, spoke briefly on the history of Blacks at this institution; Dr. Jacquelyn McLendon, Professor Emerita of English and Academic Coordinator for the 50th anniversary of the first residential African American students, discussed the commemoration year; and Carmen Bolt, Oral Historian for Swem Library, spoke about her current oral history projects.
