Getting Prepared

Step 1: Send W&M any transcripts and AP/IB scores
Make sure you send your final high school and college/university transcripts to the Office of Undergraduate Admission. Final AP/IB scores should be sent directly to the University Registrar's office
Step 2: Complete the New Student Inventory (Due January 2)

Complete the new student inventory by January 2. This will inform how you are matched with a pre-major faculty advisor who will assist you with advising and the registration process starting in January until you declare a major.

Step 3: Complete College Studies (Opens January 2)

All students review an online mini-course known as College Studies (opens January 2). College Studies gives you the information and tools you need to start your academic career. It provides academic advising information so you can create a first semester schedule and prepare for registration, and introduces key concepts of information literacy, like how to sift through information, figure out what is useful
and reliable, and then responsibly shape that information to serve your goals. Topics covered include:

  • What is a Liberal Arts Education at W&M?
  • Understanding the College Curriculum
  • Academic Advising at W&M
  • Academic Planning
  • Registration Process
  • Information Literacy
Step 4: Registration Period #1 (Week of January 6)

Based on your completion of the College Studies online module, and support from your Peer Advisor, students will register for up to 16 credits. Full schedule & information available by mid-December 2024.

Step 5: Attend Academic Advising sessions
  • Week of January 13: Your pre-major advisor will reach out to schedule an advising appointment during orientation.
  • Curing Orientation: Attend an advising information session with Academic Advising. Find out important information about the advising process and ask questions.
Step 6: Meet with your Pre-Major Advisor during Orientation

You will be assigned a pre-major faculty advisor at the start of Orientation. Learn more about the pre-major faculty advisor relationship. Your pre-major advisor will meet with you during orientation to review courses you selected during the pre-registration period and discuss the remaining courses you need to complete a full-time schedule (typically 12-16 credits per semester). You are responsible for signing up for a required advising appointment during orientation.

Step 7: Registration Period #2 during Orientation

After meeting with your pre-major faculty advisor, you will have an additional registration period to adjust your schedule. Full schedule & information available by mid-December 2024.
