William & Mary and BNU Host Virtual ESL Summer Institute
The "BNU-WM ESL Summer Institute," organized by the School of Foreign Languages and Literature of Beijing Normal University (BNU) and the School of Education of William & Mary, was successfully held online from July 12 to 15, 2022. Professor Teresa Longo, Associate Provost for International Affairs, Dr. Ying Liu, Associate Director of Global Partnerships and China Initiatives, and Professor Wang Deliang, Associate Dean of the School of Foreign Languages and Literatures at Beijing Normal University, attended the opening ceremony and made welcoming remarks.
Four professors from BNU and three faculty members from W&M shared their latest research and pedagogical insights on ESL. This Summer Institute provided an opportunity for students, educators and practitioners from Beijing Normal University and William & Mary, as well as from around the world, to exchange research ideas and to learn about the current state of ESL research in China and the United States.
Nearly two hundred students from China, America, and other countries registered for the institute, with a total of 600 participants throughout the program.
Three professors from the W&M School of Education participated in the program:
- Katherine Barko-Alva, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of ESL/Bilingual Education and Director, ESL/Bilingual Education Program
- Ting Huang, Ph.D., Assistant Professor and Director of Professional Studies
- Robert L. “Bobby” Oliver, M.A., VDOE-PGP Licentiate, Adjunct Instructor and University Supervisor for ESL and World Language Education
