Transportation

Although getting around in Williamsburg may be different than what you're used to at home, there are transportation options for those without a car at William & Mary. Depending on whether you live on or off-campus and how much traveling you plan to do, you can take advantage of the following options:

williamsburg, bus, public transit, wata

Public transportation - The Williamsburg Trolley and Bus Lines provide a low-cost or free (with a W&M ID) method of local transportation.  For the most up to date information on trolley and bus routes and schedules, visit Williamsburg Area Transit or get transit directions using Google Maps.

The Williamsburg Transportation Center also serves as an Amtrak station that provides access to out-of-town trains.

Walking or biking - Many students who live on campus or nearby main campus getting around by walking or riding their bicycle. The W&M Bike Alliance is a group of students, staff, administrators, and faculty who wish to create an environment conductive to cycling at W&M. Their webpage provides information about bike rentals, group rides, and other bike safety resources.

Taxi and rideshare services - Lyft and Uber are popular rideshare apps in the U.S. Taxi services such as Historic Taxi (757-258-7755) and Williamsburg Taxi (757-221-0004) are also available.

  • These cars are parked on-campus and are good for local trips, such as to the grocery store.
  • To rent a Zipcar, you must have had your driver’s license for at least one year.
  • You can rent with a foreign license, but if you do so, you may need to provide a translated driving record from your home country. See Zipcar for details.
  • For more information, including how to enroll and current rates, visit W&M Zipcar.

Renting a car at an agency

  • You can rent a car with a foreign license (they will want to see your passport and W&M ID).
  • You must be at least 21 years old.
  • If you are under 25 years old there will be an additional underage surcharge per day.
  • You are strongly advised to purchase the insurance, as even minor accidents or scrapes can be very expensive without insurance.
  • A SSN is not required to rent a car.
  • You can generally get a cheaper rate with an online reservation: Enterprise-Rent-A-Car or Hertz Car Rental.

Batten School Shuttle Service - During Spring 2026, a free shuttle runs between the Williamsburg Campus and the VIMS Gloucester Point Campus on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Service is provided by Patriot Shuttle. Ride duration is approximately 30 minutes each way.

Chartered transportation - Oleta Coach Lines offers William & Mary students and faculty an easy and inexpensive way of getting to/from Northern Virginia for the scheduled breaks.

W&M Parking & Transportation shuttles - Parking & Transportation operates van shuttle service to and from Richmond International (RIC) and occasionally to the Newport News/Williamsburg International (PHF) for scheduled breaks in the academic year.
