Tuition Exchange Semester/Year Programs

14 different programs!

W&M offers two different types of semester/year-long programs administered by W&M: sponsored semester programs and tuition exchanges.  Click here for information about Sponsored Semester Programs.

W&M has exchange agreements with 14 international universities, which receive W&M students and send their students to our campus for a semester or an academic year. W&M students pay their usual W&M tuition and fees, in addition to the study abroad fee and CISI insurance. Housing and meals are paid directly to the host institution.

Why Study on a W&M Exchange Program?
  • For most programs, students have access to full undergraduate catalog, allowing students to take courses not regularly offered at W&M or to delve more deeply into a subject of interest
  • Students take courses with students from all over the globe, and often live with other international students
  • Tends to be more cost beneficial to in-state students
  • Potential networking and research opportunities
  • Learn different academic culture, in addition to living abroad
  • Learn and practice independence, as the GEO typically can only send a few W&M students each semester on programs
  • For programs in non-English speaking countries, develop or deepen existing foreign language skills
  • As with all W&M study abroad programs, fulfill the COLL 300 requirement!

IMPORTANT: Due to the reciprocal nature of these agreements, we are obliged to maintain a balance of incoming and outgoing students. At times, enrollment fluctuations in both directions may mean that we are unable to send students on a particular exchange from one semester to the next, or the exchange may be competitive as we need to limit the number of students we send.

If a student is planning to study abroad more than a semester in advance, please note that exchanges are not a guaranteed option for the semester they wish to study abroad. We encourage students to have alternative programs in mind. In the event that an exchange is closed for any reason, our office will work closely with students to identify other options that might be available.

Note: W&M students will only be able to study abroad at one of our exchange partner institutions via the exchange or *assisted enrollment (St Andrews and Reunion Island) during the academic year (fall and/or spring terms). Students are not permitted to enroll directly or through a third-party program at any of our current exchange partners. If you have any questions about this policy, please contact the Global Education Advisor for the exchange. Assisted enroll options are only available for the St Andrews and Reunion Island program, where special arrangements have been made for students to attend as visiting students.
