Alumni Engagement
Get Involved with William & Mary's First-Generation Student Community
As an alumnus, your support and involvement can make a significant impact on the lives of first-generation students at William & Mary. Here are some ways you can get engaged:
Become a Mentor
Serve as a mentor to first-generation students during their junior and senior years, starting from National First-Generation College Celebration Week. Mentors are paired with students based on their industry choice and are expected to meet at least once a semester virtually. As a mentor, you will provide:
- Life advice
- Industry guidance
- Relationship building and networking tips
- Your own first-gen stories, challenges, and triumphs
Annual Events and Campaigns
- First-Gen Tailgate: Join us on campus during Homecoming for our annual First-Gen Tailgate.
- Breaking Barriers: Empowering First-Generation Women Students through Career Connections: Join us on campus in the spring for our half day summit.
- One Tribe One Day: Participate in our Annual One Tribe One Day advancement campaign in the spring and share it with your networks.
Opportunities and Connections
If you have internships, career openings, opportunities, or connections, or if you want to host first-gen students for shadowing or field trips, please contact Director Joselia Souza. Your professional insights and connections can provide invaluable experiences for our students.
Connect with other first-gen alumni and students by joining our FG+ LinkedIn Network. Share opportunities, network, and continue to support the first-gen community at William & Mary.
Your engagement as an alumnus can help build a strong network of support and opportunities for first-generation students. Thank you for your continued dedication to William & Mary and our first-gen community.
