Microsoft Office Integrations for Box

Did you know that Box integrates with Microsoft Office?  It does!  The integrated tools allow you to create Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel files in Box, edit them using the Microsoft Office Online web applications, then save them directly back to Box without downloading additional programs or applications.

The Microsoft Office Online integration also supports real-time co-authoring, so you and your coworkers can collaborate on documents in real-time. 

Get Started

Use the Microsoft Office integration tools online or download them to your desktop (Windows only).

Online Version
  1. Sign in to box.wm.edu
  2. Navigate to the file within Box that you will be working on.
  3. Select the file to open the preview pane.
  4. Click on Open with Word option and select Microsoft Word Online. This will open the file in your browser.

The first time that you open a file through Microsoft Office Online, you will be prompted to sign in with a work or school account.

  1. In the initial sign in window, enter your @wm.edu email address* and select Sign In without entering your password. This will redirect you to a William & Mary log in website (adfs.wm.edu).
  2. Enter your W&M Username credentials and click Sign In.

Desktop Version (Windows only)

Integration with Office desktop applications is available for computers running Windows.

System Requirements

  • Windows 7 or higher
  • Microsoft Office 2010 or higher
  • .NET 4.x or higher (will be handled by installer)
  • Visual Studio Tools for Office (will be handled by installer)
  • Administrative rights

Installation Instructions

  1. Download the setup package.
  2. Run the setup package.
  3. Open Microsoft Word, Excel, or PowerPoint
  4. Select File, then Open.  Box should now be listed as an option.
  5. Choose Box and then select Browse Box.
  6. If prompted to sign in, select SSO (Single Sign On) to sign in with your W&M Username and password.

The first time that you open a file through Microsoft Office, you will be prompted to sign in with a work or school account.

  1. In the initial sign in window, enter your @wm.edu email address* and select Sign In without entering your password. This will redirect you to a William & Mary log in website (adfs.wm.edu).
  2. Enter your W&M Username and password and click Sign In.

* If you are a student using Box, please enter your username@wm.edu instead of @email.wm.edu.
