About Encryption and Wireless Security
By default, Internet traffic is only encrypted (or "scrambled") for particular applications. For instance, web-based online banking is typically secured. Other traffic, such as AOL Instant Messenger or Facebook, may not be encrypted. When you are using the wireless network, this traffic could be monitored by someone with specialized tools.
The new encrypted network, W-M_Wireless_Encrypted, provides an additional layer of protection. All traffic between your laptop and the wireless access point is scrambled, to protect against someone monitoring your traffic "over the air."
The W&M network has been designed to utilize the latest security standards. As such, it only supports recent laptops. Some users may find that their laptop does not meet the minimum requirements to connect. Please contact the Technology Support Center at 757-221-HELP (4357) for troubleshooting assistance.
