Steven DeRoy
Co-founder and Director of the Firelight Group and founder of the Indigenous Mapping Workshop
Steve is an award-winning Anishinaabe entrepreneur and professional with expertise in project management, geographic information sciences, business development, and natural resources management. He is from the buffalo clan, is Anishinaabe/Saulteaux, and a member of the Ebb and Flow First Nation from Manitoba. Steve is the co-founder, director, and past president of the Firelight Group. Founder of the annual Indigenous Mapping Workshop, he has led traditional knowledge and use studies for numerous Indigenous groups affected by large-scale energy developments. He has more than 20 years of experience mentoring Indigenous practitioners, conducting risk assessments, building decision-support systems and monitoring tools, supporting land claims, facilitating community engagement and planning approaches, and supporting negotiations between Indigenous communities, governments, and industries. Steve serves as a board member for the West Coast Environmental Law Association, the Canadian Remote Sensing Society, and the Canadian Urban Institute. He is also an advisor to the Metcalf Foundation, a moderator of the Open Forum on Participatory Geographic Information Systems and Technologies, and a trainer for the Google Earth Outreach Trainers Network.
