Students Intern at U.S Army Training and Doctrine Command
Three William and Mary undergraduates are spending the summer as PIPS interns at the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) at Fort Eustis, Virginia.
Each of the students is participating in a particular aspect of war-gaming:
• Amanda Brazzel – Human Dimension
• Chris Coelho – Future Warfare
• Eric Sawchak – Science and Technology
In addition to their daily assignments, the students will complete two critical writing assignments in support of an upcoming war-game simulating challenges that the United States will likely face in 2030.
The internships reflect a renewed relationship between William & Mary and TRADOC, created by Kathryn Floyd (Director of the PIPS E-Internship Program & Visiting Assistant Professor, Department of Government) and Major General William Hix (Deputy Director, Army Capabilities Integration Center, TRADOC), with the leadership of Colonel Kevin Felix and Major Mark Lavin. In July, Brazzel, Coelho, Sawchak and Lavin spent the day in Washington, D.C. observing how the Army operates on a national level. The program included Pentagon meetings to discuss total force policy, efforts to integrate collective training enterprise in the Army, strategic planning, the role of the Joint Staff in national security, and current initiatives and challenges facing the Army.
Accompanied by Professor Floyd, the PIPS interns visited Michael Casey with the House Armed Services Committee and toured the U.S. Capitol. The program concluded with a meeting at the Army Capabilities and Integration Center (ARCIC)
