Biography

Donald F. Larson engages with students and the larger GRI community to encourage diverse perspectives in interdisciplinary studies, foster innovation, and partner in cutting-edge research across international boundaries.

He is the founder of the International Institute for Development and Environmental Studies and a Visiting Scholar at William and Mary's Global Research Institute. He earned a PH.D. in agricultural and resource economics from the University of Maryland, College Park, and holds degrees in economics from Virginia Tech and the College of William and Mary. Don has written on a range of topics with a focus on rural development, natural resource management, food security, carbon markets, commodity and futures markets, and trade. With colleagues he has authored or edited six books and has published in a diverse range of scholarly journals. He has worked with governments on policy issues in Africa, Asia, Europe, the Caribbean, Latin America and the South Pacific. Don was also part of a World Bank team that launched the first climate-finance fund, the Prototype Carbon Fund, in 1999.
