Career Pathways

Several resources exist to support faculty members in their career pathway at William & Mary. Key markers for advancement exist for tenure-eligible and tenured faculty (TTE) members as they progress through the tenure and promotion process from assistant professor to associate professor and finally to full professor. Non-tenure eligible (NTE) faculty also have pathways to promotion.

The position of department/section chair provides faculty members with an initial foray into administrative leadership, while also still retaining a portion of their faculty role. Similarly, other joint faculty and administrative positions afford faculty members an opportunity to exert their leadership on campus in the form of committee chairs, program directors, and leaders on ad hoc committees.

A great starting place to learn more information on processes and steps involved along the faculty pathway is the Faculty Handbook. The Faculty Handbook outlines the various steps for advancement in position for both TTE and NTE faculty members. The by-laws of each of the schools and Arts & Sciences provide additional information on area processes.

Data Trends

The provost's office provides information on data trends in student enrollment and faculty data. This information is updated annually to help observe changes and inform decision-making. In addition to the data presented, faculty may access the William & Mary data self-service tool, Qlik, to explore the university's available data.

In Spring 2023, Professor Dana Willner's DATA 303, Data Visualization students used their data science skills to further illustrate the Student Enrollment Trends data through a series of visual data stories.
