Hot Work
Hot work is any work that involves burning, welding, using fire- or spark-producing tools, or that produces a source of ignition. Welding and cutting operations are common to repair and maintenance operations. Hot work may not be performed anywhere on campus where flammable vapors or combustible materials exist. Work and equipment should be relocated outside of the hazardous areas, when possible.
We ensure that fire-extinguishing equipment is immediately available in a state of readiness. Such equipment may consist of pails of water, buckets of sand, hose, or portable extinguishers dependent upon the nature and quantity of the combustible material exposed. It is mandatory to assign additional personnel (fire watch) to guard against fire while hot work is being performed.
William & Mary provides their own locally-generated permits to its employees who are trained in hot work operations in accordance with university policies. Outside contractors are required to provide their own permits in accordance with their company’s hot work program. Construction and renovation contractors fall under their respective construction permits and follow their company’s hot work program. The EH&S Office verify’s all permits for completion and compliance.
