Madeline Bielski

Madeline Bielski is currently a sophomore at the College from Middleton, Wisconsin. She is pursuing a major in International Relations and is deciding between a minor in Film & Media Studies or French. On campus Madeline is an Associate News Editor for the Flat Hat, Co-Head Coach of the Swim Club, and a sister of Delta Gamma sorority. Madeline is interested in the news and media industries and she is looking to learn as much as she can about the many facets of international journalism. In her free time, Madeline loves to catch up on the news, swim, and hang out with her friends at Aromas, a local coffee shop. Overall, Madeline is excited to be a fellow in the New Media Institute this summer and can’t wait to learn and experience as much as she can in DC.

Felicia Bowins

Felicia Bowins is a junior at the College hailing from Hampton, VA.  She is an English major and Africana Studies minor and plans to pursue a career in either education or publishing.   This past summer Felicia studied abroad in South Africa where she participated in a book drive for local children.  Through this experience, she gained a greater appreciation for diverse literature and hopes to develop and promote culturally diverse literature in the future.  On campus Felicia is involved with Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, serves as Chaplain for Ebony Expressions Gospel Choir, is the Vice President of NAACP, and is a member of the Mu Upsilon chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.  Felicia is looking forward to participating in the DC program this summer and is excited to learn about the various ways media can influence society.

Michael Burrows

Michael Burrows is a junior majoring in Film and Media Studies at the College of William and Mary, with a minor in French and Francophone Studies. On campus, is heavily involved with the William and Mary Global Film Festival. He is currently on the production team for a documentary to be shown at the start of the 2015 festival.  At last year’s festival, he was responsible for public relations activities aimed at promoting the festival with varied audiences, and successfully identified and pitched a film to the planning committee that was exhibited on opening night. Last summer, he was a video production intern at APCO Worldwide, a global public relations firm in Washington, DC. At APCO, he edited videos and conducted research for government and corporate clients, and developed a new business pitch. Michael also has experience in stage lighting for William and Mary productions, and has done some acting.

In the future, he plans to become involved in the film or television industry, ideally with programs and films that advance the public’s appreciation of science. His other interests include history, philosophy, and literature, especially science fiction. He comes from Falls Church, Virginia.

Emma Hulme

Emma Hulme hails from Avondale Estates, Georgia, and is currently a junior at the College. She is majoring in European Studies, and is spending her entire junior year studying abroad in Salamanca, Spain. When on campus, Emma is associated with the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and swim club. Emma is passionate about art and design, the Spanish language, dogs, Lindt truffles, and warm weather. In her spare time, you can typically find her watching Game of Thrones and plotting against gluten, as it is her kryptonite. In terms of career choices, Emma is unsure what lies in her future but it will surely involve travel, art, and everything she learns through her summer with DCSI. 

Catherine Korizno

Catherine Korizno is a junior Film and Media Studies Major from Charleston, South Carolina. Catherine’s time attending school in Geneva, Switzerland sparked her interest in global interdependence and communications. While there, she mastered French and traveled extensively. She will be studying at the University of St Andrews this spring. She has interned previously as a producer at WCBD, Charleston’s NBC affiliate station and is the Editor of the Green and Gold Dispatch, the online campus newspaper. Outside of class, Catherine works as a representative of Residence Hall Association, Hall Council, Alma Mater Productions Publicity team, PR for the Global Film Festival, and the social chair of Spotlight Show Choir. In her free time, Catherine loves to read, travel, and is currently learning Japanese.

Miriam Kreykes

Miriram Kreykes is a sophomore hailing from Vienna, Virgina. Being a Fall 2014 transfer from the University of Mary Washington, she is still deciphering what her major and minor paths will be; Public Policy, Computer Science, Art and Business Analytics are currently her strongest candidates. Although she is still getting her footing at William & Mary, she is involved with WCWM Radio, The Virginia Informer and Avalon. Miriam is passionate about increasing social justice and proliferating earnest human interaction. She hopes to find a career that incorporates these interesst while utilizing her strong visual, observational, and managerial skills. Miriam is a fiend for good music, film, and second-hand clothing. She also has a mild obsession with dogs.

Elizabeth Linstrom

Elizabeth Linstrom is a sophomore at the College of William & Mary, pursuing a double major in Film & Media Studies and Business.  Originally from Woodbridge, Virginia she is heavily involved on and off campus.  At the college she plays Women’s Rugby, and is in charge of Marketing/PR, Merchandise, and Recruitment.  Elizabeth is also a Marketing intern for Tribe Athletics and is on the executive board as Marketing/PR Chair for William & Mary Television (WMTV).  She is also a Health Outreach Peer Educator, serving in the Mental Health Branch in HOPE.  In her free time, she enjoys sports, writing, and video production.  After college, she hopes to enlist in AmeriCorps, Teach for America, Peace Corps, and later have a career with a volunteer organization helping in third world countries, hoping to use her background in Media, Business, and Peer Education to make a difference.  Despite only living a short drive from D.C., she is beyond excited to get to experience living in such a cultural and political hub and exploring all that our nation’s capital has to offer.

Meicen Meng

Meicen Meng is an international freshman from China at the College of William and Mary. She grew up in a coastal city, Qingdao, in eastern China. She is especially interested in films and want to major in film and media studies. She also want to major in English. Her career goal is to be a film director and screenwriter. She hope through her film, she can convey some social issues of both American and Chinese society from a perspective that allows her to capture the striking difference of eastern and western world. She is currently working on her own internet talk show, in which she speak to the Chinese audience in Chinese on some social issue or interesting academic subjects from a different perspective, interviewing the professor and students here. On campus, she is also involved with She’s the first, a NGO that focus on helping girls in underdeveloped country to become the first in their family to graduate high school. Her long-term life goal: using the international perspective she has to make a difference in the Chinese society on issues such as gender equality, LGBT right, education, or maybe human rights. 

Audrey Scruggs

Audrey is a rising senior originally from Richmond, VA.  She is majoring in English and minoring in Management and Organizational Leadership. Audrey hopes to pursue a career in publishing after graduation. On campus, she is involved in a social sorority, Orientation, and the Undergraduate Honor Council. Audrey has a job off campus at Marcel Desaulniers’s MAD about Chocolate.  

Kayla Sharpe

Kayla Sharpe is a sophomore at the College of William & Mary where she is studying Film & Media with a minor in American Studies. Born and raised in Vienna, Virginia, her professional aspirations are to pursue a career in the fields of digital media and communications. Kayla currently works as the Online Editor of The Flat Hat and is the Digital Media Manager of the online magazine Her Campus. She is also an associate producer with William & Mary Television, a public relations intern with the William & Mary Global Film Festival, and a marketing assistant for Campus Recreation. She is also a member of the Nu Chi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated where she serves as Technology Chairman and is an Executive Officer of the William & Mary Chapter of the NAACP. After spending last summer as a social media intern at the Brookings Institution, Kayla is excited to delve deeper into the educational and cultural opportunities that Washington D.C. has to offer. In her spare time Kayla enjoys videography, coaching tennis, singing and dancing along to Broadway musicals, and studying trends in the video game industry.

Katie Valery

Catherine (Katie) was born in Texas and moved to five different states before settling in northern Virginia in the first grade.  She is a freshman and plans to pursue an undergraduate degree in Business with a concentration in Marketing, and a minor in Psychology or Marine Science. One day, after graduate school, she anticipates working in advertising and would love to combine her interest in marketing with her interest in science. Katie is fascinated by oceanography, is an avid scuba diver, and interned last summer on an ocean exploration vessel in the Caribbean Sea. She has played soccer for 15 years and counting, and currently plays for the W&M club soccer team. She also loves dancing on the W&M Bhangra dance team. In her remaining free time, she likes to hike, play Scrabble, pretend she can sing, and watch action movies.

Woo Yeol Paik

Woo Yeol Paik is a senior from Seoul, South Korea double majoring in Film Studies (Literary and Cultural Studies) and Psychology at the College of William & Mary. He is a former Treasurer and current Co-captain of the William & Mary Bboy (Breakdancing) Club and its performing branch, the SMILES Crew, frequently performing for the campus community and covering a broad range of organizational work, from budgeting and planning fundraisers to securing professional performers for their annual Origins Hip Hop Show. Through his engagement in the Bboy community, he has had the opportunity to film for a professional media crew, Strife.tv, for the Silverback Open Championships in Philadelphia this past fall break. At the college, Woo has collaborated with other students with other students to produce an 18 minute documentary for the Global Film Festival on the effect of the growing Chinese movie-going audience on Hollywood film-making for the past year. After graduation he hopes to delve into the world of narrative fiction film-making as a career. He is excited to finally be working towards his passions!
