AJ Goldstein '19
AJ is a senior majoring in Music and minoring in Arabic and is a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist. He has been performing with the W&M Middle Eastern Music Ensemble for the last four years singing and playing the oud, an Arabic fretless lute. In the ensemble he has sung in Arabic, Farsi, Turkish, Hebrew, and Greek. He has pursued his interest in applied ethnomusicology by studying Arabic at W&M, and at the Arab American Language Institute in Morocco (AALIM). During this program in Spring 2018 he began conducting ethnomusicological research with performers of malhun, a traditional genre of sung Moroccan poetry. After his language program, he continued pursuing this research in Morocco for an additional two months. AJ’s personal artistic projects consist of songs written on the in Jazz and Folk genres, and compositions for the oud and other Middle Eastern instruments that follow classical Arabic musical forms. He is interested in composing music that combines elements of disparate genres such as Jazz, Folk, Indie Rock, Arabic music, and Chinese music. |

Katie Kasperson '21
Katie is a sophomore from Cherry Hill, New Jersey. She plans on majoring in Psychology and minoring in Marketing. She hopes to publish psychological research, work as a journalist, and/or be a professional photographer. At the College, she is the President and Photo Director of Spoon University (a food-based interest club), a member of Phi Mu Fraternity, and a student employee at the Reeder Media Center in Swem Library. In her free time, she maintains a personal website and Etsy shop, travels frequently, and enjoys trying new restaurants. She’s worked in a variety of industries, including retail, food services, marketing/PR, private tutoring, and currently, media. She hopes to conduct research while backpacking this summer and study abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark next year. |

Shiqi Lu '20
Shiqi is a junior Government major with a potential second major in Theater at the College. She is from Chengdu, China. She is particularly interested in foreign diplomacy and foreign aid aspects and also has a strong passion for arts administration and business. She has participated in various kinds of activities and never stopped learning new things. She produced and published a non-profit painting album called Asterism about disabled children, which had been sold 2000 collections. She is the Teaching Assistant and program ambassador for the Venture For All program by Columbia Business School. Now, she is the program coordinator and Human Resources manager for the Ben Wallace China Trip and Basketball Camp in Chengdu since 2017. In the future, she plans to pursue a higher level of education in Communication. |

Maria Miao '19
Maria is a senior from Shanghai, China. She is studying World Performing Arts and Cultures at the College, taking various classes from Theater, Music, Dance Department. In her freshmen and sophomore year, she is very active with the community engagement program and she has led several service field trips with other Chinese students. Her business team was selected to represent William & Mary in the regional round of the social entrepreneurship competition Hult Prize. She has travelled to 12 different countries with the inter-disciplinary study abroad Program Semester At Sea and has walked half of the Camino de Santiago in Spain with a W&M summer abroad program in 2016. During her gap year in 2017, she taught educational drama at various elementary schools in Shanghai and has written and directed a theatre production in 1933 Old Mill Theater. She is interested in intercultural theatre, ethnomusicology and movement-based performance. She also likes to play guitar and rock climb in her spare time. |

Akane Nishimura '20
Akane is a sophomore exchange student at The College of William & Mary, and she is originally from Akita International University in Japan. Although her academic interest is broad and various, she is particularly interested in the disparity between cities and rural areas regarding access to cultural education. The interest was built by her own experience: growing up in a city area and moving to the rural area for her university. For your information, the prefecture of her university’s location has got the highest depopulation rate among all prefectures in Japan. Comparing her life living at the two places, she began to see the gap of opportunities in cultural experience as a huge problem. During the time in DC, she desires to get practical and well-thought-out ideas to solve the problem. She is also very excited to learn a lot of things from the professor, people in DC, and even other students involved in this program. As the theme of 2019 Spring is related to music, she hopes to share her love in music with people, too. In her free time, she enjoys singing and playing acoustic guitar. She is the kind of person who cannot live without music. |

Rong Qin '20
Rong is a junior at the College of William & Mary from Lanzhou, China. Majoring in International Relations, she is especially interested in International Political Economy, cultural promotion, and the balance of soft power. She plans for diverse developments in the future. After she studied Marketing and Communication with Consumers in a summer at the Columbia University, she realized that marketing has the same logic as cultural promotion between nations. In her spare time, she likes to listen to music, sing, play table tennis and travel. In this summer, she had a road trip to Atlanta, Chicago, Columbus, Cleveland and Pittsburg. She extremely enjoys appreciating the architecture in cities as she travels. At William & Mary, she served as international peer leader to welcome students from different cultural backgrounds and communicate with them. During DC semester, she is excited to experience some real examples of the integration between culture and politics in the capitol. She is also looking forward to getting her first internship experience at DC. |

Natalie Rowland '21
Natalie, from Los Angeles, is a sophomore at the College of William & Mary pursuing a double major in Global Studies with a concentration in Latin American studies and Film and Media Studies. As an employee at the Reeder Media Center in Swem Library, she is being trained in multimedia equipment and providing students with various resources. She is the founder of the Heartstringz Foundation, dedicated to providing the music of the ukulele to hospitalized children and senior citizens. She is also a singer/songwriter preforming, anywhere and at any time. She was selected to be the first TEDx speaker at the William & Mary Ted conference in Spring 2018, speaking about the 320 birthday cakes she made in a year for everyone in her high school graduating class. She is now on the TEDx committee for Spring 2019. She is incredibly excited and honored to be studying in DC next semester. |

Andrew Scarafile '20
Andrew is a Junior from Glencoe, Illinois majoring in Government and History. He is a member of the Debate Team, the International Relations Club, the Sailing Team, the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity, and the Spotswood Society. Andrew previously interned at the American Academy of Pediatrics as well as for his Congressman Bob Dold's 2016 re-election campaign. His interests include travel, tennis, and all things political. |
