Appointment of Dr. Mark Hofer as Educational Partnerships Coordinator
I am delighted to announce that Dr. Mark Hofer has accepted the position of Educational Partnerships Coordinator in the Office of Strategic Cultural Partnerships. A tenured Professor of Education, Mark has served as Director of the Studio for Teaching & Learning Innovation since 2019. In his new position, effective July 10, 2022, Mark will guide SCP’s efforts to translate the unique historical and cultural resources of William & Mary and partner institutions into accessible and impactful curricular, co-curricular, and extra-curricular educational opportunities for students, faculty, and community cohorts.
As inaugural director, Mark led the STLI team in providing crucial support for remote learning during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, offering resources and training in essential technologies and pedagogical strategy to faculty. STLI built on this experience to create a broad suite of instructional resilience, digital learning, and faculty development programs and tools, including the New Faculty Course Design Institute, the STLI Academy micro-credentials initiative, and continuation of the successful University Teaching & Learning Project.
Prior to taking on the role of STLI Director, Mark served as the Chair of Curriculum and Instruction, Co-Director of the W&M School of Education’s Center for Innovation in Learning Design, and Associate Dean for Teacher Education and Professional Services. A former high school history teacher, Mark pursued a Ph.D in instructional technology at UVA. As a doctoral student, he worked with a fellow doctoral student, Kathleen Owings Swan, to develop the Historical Scene Investigation (HSI) Project to help history teachers and their students explore open historical questions through the use of digitized primary source documents. Later, he and Swan engaged in research and development work that culminated in the publication of a book to empower social studies teachers to guide their students in the creation of short documentary films.
I am thrilled to welcome Mark as a member of the SCP team in this newly created position. His insight, experience, and enthusiasm regarding innovative pedagogy, experiential learning, and digital resources will ensure that W&M, our partner institutions, and the broader community will benefit from the rich educational opportunities that our cultural and historical assets offer.
I also extend my deep gratitude to the members of the search committee and our partners in the School of Education and Human Resources for the time, effort, and collaboration they devoted to make the recruiting and hiring process a success.
