Student Tribe Card

Welcome to William & Mary! Your Tribe Card is the official form of identification for students, faculty and staff and an essential part of your life here on campus. A Tribe Card is your (literal) key to campus and is uniquely tied to you for your use. From door access to meal plans or attendance verification, your Tribe Card will open doors for you at William & Mary.

Tribe Cards are processed at the beginning of your first year on campus and are typically produced for new students enrolled full-time in a degree-seeking program during your Orientation Program. Online Students may be issued a card in person when visiting campus.

Before cards can be produced however, two crucial elements are required to help identify you as a William & Mary student. Both steps require an active W&M username.

Preparing to Submit
Supporting Documents

Before getting started, review the Photo Submission Guidelines to ensure your photo is acceptable. A valid government issued photo identification is required to obtain your Tribe Card. The ID should display your name, birth date and expiration date. Forms of ID include:

  • Driver’s License or Learner’s Permit issued by a state DMV
  • Identification Card issued by a state DMV
  • Permanent Resident card, Passport/Passport Card including the MRZ code (when submitting a foreign passport please include the U.S. Visa page including the MRZ code)
  • Military ID card. Note: Driver’s License or Identification Card stamped “void” are unable to be accepted.

Expired, damaged or unclear documents, trusted traveler cards and school IDs are not accepted for identity verification.

Name Verification

Visit tribecard.wm.edu and log in using your W&M credentials. Verify that the name listed above the left menu is correct and is the name that should be displayed on the printed Tribe Card.

If you have a Preferred/Chosen First Name listed in the Personal Information Questionnaire (PIQ) this is what will be listed on your Tribe Card. Your last name must match your government issued ID. Learn More.

If a name is printed incorrectly on a card, replacement cards can be purchased for $23. All purchases are non-refundable.

Photo Submission and ID Verification

Visit tribecard.wm.edu and select “Student & Staff Login” from the left menu. Once logged in, select “Upload Your Photo” and follow the prompts to upload an original photo (.jpg) of your government ID as well as your new photo. To expedite the review process, please ensure you crop your photo from the top of your head to your collarbone using the provided system tools.

You will receive an email confirmation to your W&M email address confirming your photo has been submitted successfully and is pending review. All uploaded information must be verified by Tribe Card Services which could take up to three business days to process. You will receive an email notification to your W&M account if your photos have been accepted or rejected.

Card Processing

If you are participating in an Orientation program and had your credentials accepted prior to the communicated deadline, your card may be processed as part of that program.

You may need to visit the Tribe Card Services office for your card to be issued if:

  • The communicated Orientation deadline was not met, please visit the Tribe Card Services office for processing and card printing. This could take between 5-10 minutes pending ID verification.
  • If your Orientation program does not distribute Tribe Cards upon arrival, please visit the Tribe Card Services office for processing and card printing. This could take between 5-10 minutes pending ID verification.

In these cases, please visit the Tribe Card Services office in Campus Center during normal business hours to receive your card. Tribe Cards are issued directly to you and cannot be picked up by others. Please bring a valid Government issued photo ID with you for identity verification.
