Frequently Asked Questions
Compensation Package
Every contracted summer employee will receive a competitive hourly rate and housing.
Can I take summer school classes or work on summer research projects?
Yes. We will ask you to submit your schedule at the beginning of the season.
Is housing provided?
Yes, it is. You will share an apartment with co-workers.
Will I be able to take a vacation?
Unfortunately, no. Given the workload distribution and the short time span of the job, there is no "vacation time." You will typically receive two days off each week, though not necessarily back-to-back. If you have any prior commitments or days that you know you will need off, please let us know in your application.
What will my hours be?
Each week is different and each position is different. There are no set hours of 8-5 and hours generally vary depending upon your position. There will be rotating shifts. Nights and weekends are required.
Do I need a driver's license?
Not only do you need a license, but you must have had if for 6 months at the beginning of your employment and not have any restrictions that would keep you from driving (this means any tickets for traffic violations or accidents in the past 2 years). You will also be required to attend driver's training during your first week of employment.
Do I have to wear a uniform?
Each employee will receive several T-shirts to wear while working. At check-ins and when staffing the Info Desk, you will be required to wear Khaki or black shorts/slacks with the designated T-shirt.
Do I have to work outside?
Yes, there will be some outdoor work required, though most of the work is inside the residence halls (but it is summer in Williamsburg and it's still hot!).
Is training mandatory?
Yes, staff training is critical to a successful summer. The training typically takes place the week after graduation.
Do I need to have conference experience?
No previous experience is required, but you do need to have a positive, enthusiastic attitude and the willingness to learn. We are looking for ambitious students who like to work in a team atmosphere and are able to provide quality customer service while representing the university.
