Video feature: W&M geology in Norway

Geology professors Christopher Bailey and Nicolas Balascio this summer melded a class field trip with an National Science Foundation-funded research project above the Arctic Circle in Norway.
Students in the class spent two weeks exploring the diverse geology of the Lofoten Islands, examining evidence of glacial erosion and deposition as well as changes in sea levels. They also were immersed in local culture existing at the northern fringe of land that is considered "habitable."
Balascio's ongoing NSF-funded research involves seeking evidence of impacts produced by early inhabitants on the fragile ecosystem. Primary evidence is obtained by taking core samples from local lakes, samples that are brought back and examined in W&M geology laboratories.
