W&M ranks number one in the nation for sustainability
The College of William & Mary’s Undergraduate Business Program is the best in the country for Sustainability, according to the latest Bloomberg BusinessWeek rankings of 14 specialty areas. The program was also recognized for marketing (#2) and accounting (#6). Ranked 23rd overall and 8th among publics, the undergraduate program in the Mason School of Business is one of just a handful of the top 25 schools to have more than one top 10 specialty ranking.
Bloomberg BusinessWeek noted the "school’s extreme focus on everything green" in its top ranking and pointed to courses in Green Supply Chain and Environmental Consulting, and the Net Impact Chapter as examples.
Chris Adkins, director of Undergraduate Business Program said, "We are creating the next generation of business leaders, where social and environmental concerns are woven into the core of business thinking. The key for business and b-schools is partnership so we can scale impact. This year was a powerful year of partnership, launching the Corporate & College Collaborative for Sustainability with support from IBM."
Also mentioned was the school’s partnership with Saatchi & Saatchi S which resulted in the College's "Do One Thing for Sustainability" (DOT) initiative, pushing students to do their part in the green movement. Some student- and faculty-suggested DOTs include eliminating textbooks where possible and getting rid of plastic bottles at various campus events.
In 2009, Adam Werbach, global CEO of Saatchi & Saatchi S and author of "Strategy for Sustainability," spoke to nearly 400 in the newly opened LEED Gold Certified Alan B. Miller Hall, home of the Mason School of Business. He praised the university’s efforts in becoming the first to take on the challenge of DOT -- Do One Thing for Sustainability.
"Our great showing in the specialty rankings are a true measure of our outstanding faculty and program staff, who are tireless in their efforts to create an extraordinary experience for our students as they prepare to take on the challenges of the global economy," said Dean Lawrence B. Pulley of the Mason School of Business.
In early April, the Undergraduate Program hosted the National Undergraduate Business Symposium 2011. NUBS is an annual gathering of the top 30 undergraduate business programs in the U.S. The theme was “Our Opportunity for Impact: Best Practices in Educating the Next Generation of Business Leaders.”
