The Virginia Symphony Orchestra (VSO), which includes many members of William &Mary's applied music faculty, will perform a free concert Thursday, Sept. 1, 2011 at 7:30 p.m. at the Lake Matoaka Amphitheatre. The family-friendly concert is the first in a series of five free concerts that the Symphony is giving in the Hampton Roads area as a prelude to their new season.  The performance in Williamsburg is open to the public and co-sponsored by the City of Williamsburg and the College of William & Mary.

In his second year performing at Lake Matoaka, VSO’s dynamic Associate Conductor Benjamin Rous returns with Symphony Under the Stars, a new, eclectic program. It features composers from Verdi to Copland; film scores, including those from The Magnificent Seven, Titanic and Pirates of the Caribbean; stirring patriotic favorites; and much more.

Guests are invited to bring family and friends, picnic baskets, beach chairs and blankets. In the event of inclement weather, the performance will be held at Phi Beta Kappa Hall.   For information please call 757-221-3300.

The Lake Matoaka Amphitheatre is located at 121 Ukrop Way.  A campus map is available at http://www.wm.edu/about/visiting/directions/campusmap/index.php.

The VSO will also perform a series of concerts this year at Phi Beta Kappa Hall.  For information about that series, other VSO concerts and tickets, visit www.virginiasymphony.org.
