W&M among top contributors to Teach For America for third consecutive year

The College of William & Mary has been ranked among the top contributors for Teach for America’s Teaching Job Corps for the third consecutive year. This year, the College was recognized as the sixteenth-highest producer for Teach for America among medium-sized schools.

Teach for America is a national program for recently graduated college students and professionals who wish to commit at least two years to teaching in urban and rural public schools across America. According to a press release from Teach for America, the program received 46,000 applications this year, accepting only 4,500 new members. The schools are ranked based on the number of graduating seniors they contributed to the 2010 corps. This year, eighty-one percent of those accepted to the program are recently graduated seniors.

The new members represent 630 schools across the nation. Of these 4,500 new members, 23 of them are W&M alumni, landing the College its number 16 spot among the top-20 medium-size schools (3,000-9,999 undergraduate students) that contribute to the program. In 2008, W&M was ranked eighth among top contributors for Teach for America. In 2009, the College came in seventh.

William & Mary is known for its students’ commitment to causes like Teach For America, being ranked among the top producers for the Peace Corps this year as well, with 40 W&M undergraduate alumni serving the Corps.
