William & Mary staff and faculty members enjoyed a free picnic lunch on Thursday as the Combined Virginia Campaign Committee kicked off its annual drive at the College.

“I always give,” said Orine Holloway, a housekeeping worker in Swem Library, after she dropped a donation into a plastic jar at the picnic. “It’s a worthy cause.”

The campaign is an annual charity drive among state employees. Participants may donate up to four participating charities through cash, check or payroll deductions; 100 percent of donations go to the designated charities.

The committee’s goal this year is to have 375 William & Mary people donate. A letter was sent to the campus community earlier in the week, asking people to donate through the campaign.

“There is no easier way to be a force for positive change in our community and in the world than to contribute through CVC,” the letter said. “When you give, you have the chance to make a difference for a cause you believe in—whether that means giving to the local Humane Society, supporting the work of UNICEF all over the globe, or contributing to more than 1,300 other local, national or international charities.”
