The search is on! In a message to the College community, William & Mary President Taylor Reveley said that he has asked a committee of faculty, staff, students and alumni to work on finding a new mascot for the nation's second-oldest university.

It's time to pick a mascot for the College of William & Mary and everyone is invited to participate, school officials announced today.

In a message to the College community, William & Mary President Taylor Reveley said that he has asked a committee of faculty, staff, students and alumni to work on finding a new mascot for the nation's second-oldest university. Terry Driscoll, director of athletics, will chair the committee.

"We have the ‘Tribe,' which will continue to unite us," said Reveley, "but the College has lacked a mascot ever since the feathers bit the dust. We need a mascot for all purposes at William & Mary, athletic and other. It's time to find one and have fun in the process."

In conjunction with Reveley's message, the mascot committee launched a Web site at www.wm.edu/mascot so that people can submit ideas or comments, ask questions and learn about the process through a section of frequently asked questions. The goal, Driscoll said, is for the committee to bring final recommendations to the president during the fall of 2009.

"This will be a very open and inclusive selection process," said Driscoll, adding that the committee's first order of business will be deciding on guidelines for submissions. Updates on the process and timelines will be posted on the committee's Web site. "We encourage people to participate and submit ideas."
