William & Mary Police organizes campus-wide food drive
“As we come to the end of another successful academic year, let’s show our support for our community once more before we disperse for the summer. The need is great, but I know your generous spirits are even greater. Please do what you can,” said Vice President for Administration Anna Martin in an email announcing the drive to the campus community.
The idea for the food drive came from WMPD Officer Chester Fowler. Fowler was watching a news story about the difficulties local pantries are experiencing in keeping up with the demand for food. He said, “We have jobs while many others do not. It seems to me the least we could do is to help out the community by providing supplies to the shelter”.
Donations will be collected by WMPD from food donation boxes located across campus including the Campus Center, Sadler Center, SWEM library, McGlothlin Street, and the Police Department lobby.
FISH is ecumenical, community program with the mission to help feed and clothe our needy neighbors.
Martin noted that FISH reports they have provided almost 7,000 people with over 100,000 meals in the past year and that the economic downturn has increased the number of those in need coming to the organization for help.
Items of particular need include beans, rice, pasta, canned vegetables, tuna, peanut butter and jelly, soup, cereal, crackers, powdered milk.
