High profile plug...oh no, that's - PUG ESPN2's afternoon show, SportsNation, highlighted W&M's mascot finalists. Co-host Michelle Beadle, herself a pug owner, gave a nod to the pug.

William & Mary’s search for a new mascot reached a national audience Thursday.

Sportsnation co-host Michelle Beadle (left) offered her own pug as a celebrity mascot. The search, which announced five finalists Tuesday, was included during a segment of ESPN2’s SportsNation. The segment showed early drawings of the finalists – the Griffin, King and Queen, Phoenix, Pug and the Wren – and co-host Michelle Beadle also gave a plug to both the strong start by the Tribe men’s basketball team (off to its best start in 17 years at 7-2) and the Tribe football team’s impressive run to this weekend’s FCS NCAA championship semifinal against Villanova University.

Beadle, the proud owner of a pug, also made a plea to the search committee to consider her own pet (named Leeroy Jenkins) as a celebrity mascot. The host’s feedback is just one of thousands of pieces of input the committee has received so far among its blog, Facebook and Twitter pages.

To take a survey on the finalists and submit official feedback, people can go to the mascot search Web site. The deadline for input is 5 p.m. on Jan. 7, 2010.
