Symphony concert moved to PBK Hall
The College of William and Mary will host a free Virginia Symphony concert at Phi Beta Kappa Hall on Thursday, Aug. 28 at 7:30 p.m. The concert was originally scheduled to take place at the College's Lake Matoaka Amphitheater, but the venue was change due to weather. The concert is free and open to the public, but space is limited. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., and guests will be seated on a first-come, first-served basis until capacity is reached.
The pre-season concert, entitled “La Vida Salsa,” is being sponsored by the City of Williamsburg and co-sponsored by the College of William and Mary and the Virginia Symphony Society of Greater Williamsburg. In case of rain, the concert will be held in the College’s Phi Beta Kappa Hall.
From Gershwin’s “Cuban Overture” to Bizet’s “Habanera” to the music of Piazolla and Rodriguez’s “Mosaico Mexicano,” Matthew Kraemer will lead the orchestra in a salsa-inspired concert that may have people dancing in the aisles. Kraemer, beginning his second season with the VSO, holds the Bruno Walter Associate Conductor’s Chair with the Symphony.
“These outdoor concerts give us an opportunity to give back to the community and present great music in informal outdoor settings,” said Kraemer. “We look forward to these concerts every year.”
William and Mary has enjoyed a close connection to the Virginia Symphony. Just last year, JoAnn Falletta, the symphony’s music director, received an honorary doctorate of arts during the College’s annual Charter Day ceremony.
