Thursday night incident
The following message was sent to the campus community on Feb. 22, 2019 - Ed.
Dear William & Mary community,
I write to inform you about a traffic stop Thursday night involving two of our law students and deputies from a neighboring jurisdiction. It’s important that you receive the facts as provided to us and also know that the university is providing our students with all available support and resources during what has been a very traumatic time.
Here is a press release from the York County-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office and a press release from the Williamsburg Police Department.
Thankfully our students are ok, but they are understandably scared and have questions. The dean of the law school, representatives from student affairs, William & Mary Police and other senior administrators met with the students and their classmates this afternoon at the law school. We have also been in touch with all authorities involved. Since this matter occurred within city limits, the Williamsburg-James City County Commonwealth’s Attorney has asked Williamsburg Police to conduct an investigation into the incident. York County is also completing its own internal review into the matter. We will assist in anyway necessary. In the meantime, please know the university community will continue to support any students impacted.
Sam Jones, Chair
William & Mary Emergency Management Team
