Rave Guardian App

Sam Jones, chair of the W&M Emergency Management Team, sent the following messages to the campus community - Ed.

Oct. 25, 2016

Dear William & Mary Community,

Following up on last week’s message, Rave Mobile Security reports that its data centers and the Rave Guardian app continue working normally after Friday’s global cyberattack. The app, which allows members of campus to report emergencies from their mobile devices, is functioning properly and we encourage you to resume using it.

Rave continues to improve its protections against potential cyber threats.  As noted in Saturday’s message, our mass notification system through Rave was not affected and also continues to function properly.

If you have not done so, please download the Rave Guardian app, which works like an emergency “blue phone” in your pocket and offers a number of safety functions, including the ability to set a timer if you are alone or in an unfamiliar place, so that friends, police or others you trust will be notified if you are late.

You can also report any emergency by dialing 911 or calling William & Mary Police directly at 221-4596.

Dear William & Mary Community,

Much of the United States and parts of Europe have experienced a coordinated cyber attack that disrupted access to a large number of online services.

While this attack was not targeted at W&M or any of its resources, your ability to access some online “cloud” services such as Box and Qualtrics, could continue to be impacted during this time. One such cloud service we offer the community is the Rave Guardian app, which allows you to report emergencies from your mobile device. Rave reports their data centers are performing normally but access to some of their hosted resources, including the Rave Guardian app, could experience a disruption. As such, as a precaution we are recommending all members of the community use traditional 911 or the W&M Police direct dispatch line (757-221-4596) to report any emergency. We will notify you when the situation has been resolved.

Please note that our ability to send out emergency messages to the campus community through the Rave mass notification system has not been impacted. That system has been tested and is functioning properly.

More information on this cyber attack, including sites experiencing disruption, is available here: http://gizmodo.com/this-is-probably-why-half-the-internet-shut-down-today-1788062835
