Message on Orlando
President Taylor Reveley sent the following message to the campus community June 15, 2016. - Ed.
Dear William & Mary Community,
The horror last weekend in Orlando provides a grim reminder that virulent prejudice against members of the LGBTQ community still exists in some dark corners of our society. It takes a terrible toll. Many of those killed or wounded in Orlando were no older than most undergraduates at William & Mary. What happened there was a direct assault on the sort of community and acceptance we value so highly for everyone at W&M. It was an intolerable threat to us all. Our campus is, and must always be, a safe and civil place for everyone.
A group of more than 70 students, faculty and staff gathered on Monday evening at the Wren Building for a candlelight vigil to honor those slain or wounded in Orlando. A news story about the vigil, which was organized by William & Mary Lambda Alliance, appears on our website.
Wherever we are this summer, I do hope we will think about how to make even stronger and more far-reaching the sort of community with which we are graced at William & Mary.
