Safety notice to the community

Vice President for Student Affairs Ginger Ambler sent the following message to the campus community on March 27, 2014. - Ed.

Dear William & Mary Community:

It is important I inform you about an incident that occurred last night on campus. Three juveniles (non-students) were arrested on assault and attempted robbery charges. Fortunately, the victim, a student, was not physically injured.

Here is what we know about this incident: Around 11:30 p.m. on March 26, a W&M student walking along the Yates Path (behind the Student Health Center) was approached by four males. These individuals, who all appeared to be juveniles, pushed and shoved the student and attempted to rob him before the entire group ran away. According to the report, the suspects did not display any weapons during the incident.

A William & Mary Police officer was in the area at the time and immediately responded. Officers were able to locate and arrest three suspects. Police are working to identify a fourth suspect. At this point, police do not have enough information on the fourth suspect to provide an accurate description. If you saw anything suspicious on campus last night or have any other information about this incident, please contact William & Mary Police at 221-4596.

Before you heard about this elsewhere, I wanted to be sure our community has accurate information on what occurred. William & Mary and the Williamsburg are generally very safe communities; this incident last night is an unfortunate reminder that crimes can and do occur. Please be mindful of your surroundings and remember the university has a campus escort service available in the evenings Monday – Sunday. You may reach them at x1-3293.

Of course, call the police immediately if something happens to you or if you see suspicious activity -- on campus or off, use 911.

Sincerely,

Ginger Ambler
