Dear William & Mary community,

I write to share the news that John Henry McCray, Professor Emeritus, School of Business, died on December 12.  Professor McCray graduated from the University of Virginia in 1966.  After a stint as a staff accountant at Price Waterhouse & Co., he returned to academia, completing his Ph.D. at the University of Georgia in 1971.  Following a tour of duty in the Army, he held faculty positions at the University of Kentucky and Virginia Commonwealth University.  Professor McCray joined the faculty of the William & Mary School of Business in 1976.  He was part of a team of accounting faculty whose efforts raised the university’s accounting program to national ranking.  He was passionate about his research and was recognized as a pioneer by the accounting profession for his applications of advanced statistical methods to the practice of auditing.  He retired after 24 years at W&M in 2001.

Professor McCray attended Hickory Neck Episcopal Church for many years, briefly serving on the vestry.  He was an Eagle Scout and loved sailing and helping people.  Preceded in death by his brothers Lanier and George, he is survived by his wife of 51 years, Jennie, daughters Hildreth and Jennie, brother Bernard, sister Hildreth, granddaughter Sydney and numerous nieces and nephews.  A memorial service will be held at Hickory Neck Episcopal Church Saturday, December 21, 2013, at 11:00 a.m.

Sincerely,

Michael
