Convocation to be held Sept. 2
Ginger Ambler, vice president for student affairs, sent the following message to the campus community on Aug. 30, 2011 - Ed.
Dear Students,
Faculty, and Staff,
What a start to the new year it has been! After enduring smoke from the Dismal Swamp fires, a Virginia-style earthquake, and then the power of Hurricane Irene – all within a week’s time – I am pleased to be sending a campus-wide email that is purely CELEBRATIVE!
According to William and Mary tradition, the campus community gathers at the beginning of each academic year at Opening Convocation to formally celebrate the start of the academic session and, most especially, to welcome our newest students to the College. In adjusting the semester’s schedule following our recent closing, Opening Convocation has now been re-scheduled for this Friday afternoon, September 2 at 4:30 p.m. in the Wren Courtyard. New graduate and undergraduate students are our guests of honor at Convocation and will be ushered to reserved seating for the occasion.
Following the official procession of new students through the portico of the Wren Building, the entire campus community is invited to share in a festive picnic dinner in the Sunken Garden. Should inclement weather cause us to move the picnic indoors, an announcement to that effect will be left at our Special Events Weather Line, 221-3868. Unless there is lightning, however, we will have the ceremony in the Courtyard as planned, even if there are raindrops. Hurricanes notwithstanding, our Opening Convocation celebrations are generally undaunted by rain, heat, or Virginia humidity -- we will be there this Friday afternoon and hope you will be, too.
See you on then!
