Announcement regarding the vice provost for academic affairs

Provost Michael Halleran sent the following message to the campus community on May 21, 2010 - Ed.

Dear Colleagues,

I am very pleased to announce that Kathleen F. Slevin, Chancellor Professor of Sociology, has agreed to serve as the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, effective July 1st.  Kate, a leading sociologist with a speciality in aging and gender, will bring to this position considerable and uncommon experience, energy and judgment.  She has been at W&M since 1986, and served the College with distinction in many roles, including as chair of the Department of Sociology, Vice President of the Faculty Assembly, and as a member of the A&S Faculty Affairs Committee, the Enrollment Management Committee and Faculty Research Committee.

Kate has also held the positions of Academic Coordinator of the State Council of Higher Education of Virginia (SCHEV) and Associate Provost for Academic Affairs at W&M.  She has received the SCHEV Outstanding Faculty Award, the Thomas Jefferson Award and, just this month, the Graves Award, among many other recognitions.  The next few years will present both significant opportunities and challenges for the College, and I am fully confident that Kate will provide excellent leadership in this role.

Let me also take this opportunity to thank the search committee, chaired by Associate Provost Earl Granger, for their work and invaluable perspectives, and also the excellent faculty who were candidates for the position.  It speaks deeply to the strength of our faculty that we have so many vibrant leaders.

Please join me in congratulating Kate Slevin on this appointment.  We both look forward to working with all of you to advance the College as a leading liberal arts university in the 21st century.

With best wishes,

Michael
Provost
